Rules of Zakat in Islam
1. Zakat is Obligatory
Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
It is mandatory for every adult Muslim who owns wealth above the Nisab (minimum threshold).
Allah says in the Quran:
“And establish prayer and give zakah…” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:43)
2. Nisab – Minimum Wealth
Zakat is only obligatory if your wealth reaches a minimum threshold (Nisab).
Nisab is calculated based on gold or silver value:
Gold: 85 grams of gold
Silver: 595 grams of silver
Wealth below the Nisab is not subject to Zakat.
3. Assets Subject to Zakat
Zakat is applicable on:
Cash: Money in hand, in banks, or savings.
Gold and Silver: Jewelry, coins, or bars (not for personal use if below Nisab).
Business Inventory: Products or goods intended for trade.
Investment & Stocks: Value of shares and investments after one lunar year.
Agricultural Produce: Crops, grains, and fruits (different rates apply).
Livestock: Animals like camels, cows, and sheep (special calculation rules).
4. Rate of Zakat
The general rate for most assets: 2.5% of wealth annually.
Special cases:
Agricultural produce: 5–10% depending on irrigation method.
Livestock: Based on quantity and type (cows, camels, sheep).
5. Time of Zakat
Zakat is due once a lunar year (Hijri year) passes on the wealth.
The date of Zakat can be tracked individually based on when your wealth reached Nisab.
6. Recipients of Zakat
The Quran defines 8 categories of Zakat recipients (Surah At-Tawbah 9:60):
The poor (Al-Fuqara)
The needy (Al-Masakin)
Zakat collectors
Those whose hearts are to be reconciled
To free captives or slaves
Those in debt
In the cause of Allah
Travelers in need
7. Intention (Niyyah)
Zakat must be given with pure intention (Niyyah) for Allah’s pleasure.
Giving without sincerity invalidates Zakat.
8. Prohibition of Delay
Zakat should not be delayed unnecessarily.
It should be given as soon as it becomes due, after one lunar year on Nisab wealth.
9. Exemptions
Debts owed by the person can be deducted from the wealth before calculating Zakat.
Personal items and necessities are exempt (clothes, house, etc.).
✅ Summary:
Zakat is a mandatory Islamic duty, calculated at 2.5% of wealth above Nisab, due once a lunar year, and distributed to eight specific categories of recipients. It purifies wealth, helps the needy, and strengthens the social fabric.
